Do I need to pay additional fees to book a seat in the Shinkansen?

In Japan, the Shinkansen (high-speed train) ticket fare includes 2 costs:

• The travel fare; and,
• The seat reservation fee.

The Japan Rail Pass includes these two costs, so booking seats in the Shinkansen is free for JR Pass holders.

Moreover, except for Green Pass holders, seat reservation is not required as most of the Shinkansen are equipped with ordinary class non-reserved seats cars.
